Raising Playful Tots show #17 Create Outdoor playgroups
” No bad weather only bad clothing!”
Playgroups and gatherings for parents and children have been around for the longest time. What about having an outdoor playgroup? Imagine transferring activities outside and including outdoor activities in a regular club- rain, shine, snow or wind!

Today’s interview is with Kari Svenneby founder of the website activekidsclub.com. Her website provides you with information about everything you need to know about connecting children and adults to nature and play. No matter the weather, she will show you joyful and fun outdoor activities to do in all the four seasons.
Kari is a proud wildcrafter, urban mother, librarian and classically trained chef championing the benefits exposure to nature gives children. Being that Kari is Norwegian, her husband is from Florida and they live in Canada she likes to call three places her home. Norway, Florida and Canada.

Imaginary play outside?

I was very much encouraged to go and play outside. I remember the scuff marks on my shoes because I used my feet to stop and not my brakes. I remember being outside a lot growing up. I did the bulk of my growing up in a small village then small town so we were never far away from being in farmland. The boys have grown up firstly in a very small village and right now in a city suburb. I know I have felt out of my depth with outdoor activities. Whether you have moved or are looking for interesting things to do outside. I know how easy it might be for us to be outside but sometimes it’s hard to motivate the little ones to stay out for long periods of time. Some can and some need a little help.
The photographs in Caroline’s book, Small Fry Outdoors really bring the ideas to light. After listening to both interviews you’ll get a sense of the type of activities to expect in this book.
I’ve really enjoyed our copy as a coffee table book and as an ideas book.

Raising Playful Tots #7 Caroline Webster Small Fry
For most of 2009 I was on a personal quest to get outdoors and encourage play with my little ones. We love all aspects of play but like most people we have our favourites. My boys are really active so going outdoors makes perfect sense. Now that we go out I wonder what stopped me/us so much from doing all this earlier.
Today’s interview is with freelance writer, Caroline Webster of Small Fry Fun. She is a passionate believer in the magic of being outdoors & encouraging lots of unstructured play for children. She lives in Sydney, Australia with her husband and is mum to two young children. Caroline is a co-founder of the website Small Fryfun.com along with Susie Cameron & Katrina cook. She’s a published author of the book “Small Fry Outdoors” which is the second book of the three jam packed resource books available for parents & carers from Small fry She also blogs at http://salisburydowns.wordpress.com/
If you needed a bit of a prod like we did in 2009 to get outdoors or you are happy to be outside you’ll find something new to try.
